Great Trout - but requires a unique technique to go beyond the stockers next to the roadways! Salmon Brook has a variety of access points. My favorate is off Rt. 189 just prior to Grandby Ctr. The DEP stocks heavy near the roadways but that's not where the lunkers or natives lie! I always leave this section of Salmon Brook to my last option.Technique is key in this stream especially after the initial stocking. The natives are cautious and easilly spooked. You need to be silent and stealthy to catch the good ones. Key to this streams success is your ability to deliver the bait deep under the logs and banks just in front of their nose. "Floating" bait just doesn't deliver the goods! Be prepaired to loose at least a half dozen hooks if you fish this steam properly. Use a longer rod to stay back from the water with nightcrallers or worms with a heavy sinker just a foot from the hook. Bounce it along the bottom and deep under logs and banks to draw out the keepers. Be patient and let the bait sit there. My favorate spots are downstream from Rt 189 along the Rt hand side of Salmon Brook a hundred and fifty + yards to where the West Branch enters. You need to follow the stream and can't cut the corner due to swampy conditions between the streams. Walk upsteam along the West Branch of Salmon Brook about 50 + yards and enter a completely different stream condition and environment. Sandy and rocky bottom, no deep slow moving pools as is the case with the main branch. It features prestine clear, faster moving water with lots of bends, submerged logs and fallen trees. This stretch does not get the weekend warrior after the stockers but offers noticeable solitude, off the beaten path of activity, that can deliver the best natives and fighters the state has to offer. Try it you'll like it - I've been going here for 30 years and keep going back! Stealth is truly key to success in this prestine stream! You need to be so quiet you can here your heartbeat. This is a stream where you need to take your time and test each and every pool, bend in the stream and submerged log. Their have been times when I can see a lunker under the log but can't get him to stike. Other times, I've got my limit from one small pool.
